My Story – Barrett Baber

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about music, it’s that the best songs usually start with a story. And my story started long before I ever stepped on a stage.

I grew up in a small town in Arkansas, where life moved a little slower, and people paid attention to the things that mattered—family, hard work, and faith. Music was always around, but it wasn’t something I imagined would become my life. Like a lot of folks where I’m from, music was something you did because you loved it, not because you thought it could turn into a career.

My parents raised me on a steady diet of country, gospel, and the kind of songs that told the truth about life. I learned early on that music could say things that were sometimes hard to say out loud. It could tell stories about heartbreak, redemption, mistakes, and second chances. Those kinds of songs stuck with me.

For a long time, music was just something I carried with me while I focused on other parts of life. I became a school teacher and a basketball coach, and those years shaped me in ways I’ll always be grateful for. Working with kids, being part of a community, and trying to help people find the confidence to know that stuff matters. It still does.

But the truth is, the music never left.

Songwriting slowly became something I couldn’t ignore. The more I wrote, the more I realized that music wasn’t just a hobby for me, it was a calling. Those songs started opening doors I never expected, and before long, I found myself stepping onto stages and chasing a dream that had been quietly growing in the background for years.

A lot of folks first heard my name during my time on The Voice, and that experience definitely changed my life. It gave me a platform and introduced my music to people across the country. But what mattered most to me wasn’t the spotlight, it was the reminder that the songs themselves were connecting with people.

Since then, the journey has taken me all over the place.

I’ve had the chance to write songs that have been recorded by artists I respect, including Cody Johnson. One of the songs I wrote, “Nothing On You,” became a number-one record, which is something every songwriter dreams about but never takes for granted. Hearing a song you wrote reach people like that is one of the most humbling feelings in the world.

But no matter what happens in Nashville or on the charts, the thing that keeps me grounded is the songwriting itself.

For me, music has never been about chasing trends or fitting into a box. The songs I care about the most are the honest ones—the ones that come from real experiences, real mistakes, real faith, and real life. Those are the songs that last.

These days I spend my time writing, recording, and playing shows where the music can be experienced the way it was meant to be heard, up close, personal, and honest. Whether that’s in a small listening room, a theater, the goal is always the same: tell the story behind the song and let the music do the rest.

At the end of the day, I’m still that guy from Arkansas who believes a good song can change someone’s day, maybe even their life.

And if you’re here reading this, I’m grateful you’re part of the story.
